Mozambican musician Gil Pinto, one of Sofala province’s the most popular artists and firm favourite in the city of Beira, has died after an illness.
Pinto died on Easter Sunday at the age of 66 in Beira, and leaves a great void in the Mozambican music firmament.
Born on 2 October, 1949, in Buzi district, Sofala, Pinto moved to Beira at the tender age of just one month. His passion for music emerged at the beginning of the 60s, influenced by his marimba-playing father and guitarist uncle.
He first stepped on stage on August 20, 1965, in a party for the anniversary of the city of Beira.
Gil Pinto formed the bands “7ª Banda Musical Manica e Sofala” and “Irmãos Moçambicanos”and he was also a member of the groups “Camponeses da Munhava”; “Sacrifícios”, “MK7” and “Irmãos Sem Maldade.”
Pinto shared the stage with some of the world’s greatest greats musicians and bands, including John Chibadura, Oliver Ntukudzi, Ngwenha Brothers, Devera Ngwenha, Max Banda, Madala, David Mazembe, Avelino Mondlane, Zaida and Carlos Chongo, Wazimbo, Grace Évora, Jorge Mamad and many others.
He leaves a widow and eleven children.
