The restoration works of the Museu Market, located in the select Maputo neighbourhood of Museu, are due to begin next week, reports Noticias. Market vendors will be temporarily relocated to a nearby area for the duration of the works, which Maputo City councilman for Economic Activities, João Munguambe, says will last about a year.
About 15 million meticais will be invested in the project, which aims to offer a better environment for the 279 traders who carry out their business activities there.
The upgrade will mean that the minibus terminal will move closer to Josina Machel Secondary School.
Councilman Munguambe said that, because of the proximity of the market to a school where students have been associated with the consumption of alcohol, the municipal police presence would be reinforced to monitor the situation, and vendors had already been warned that they would be punished if they sold alcohol to minors.
