O País / Liberation Struggle Veteran, General António Hama Thai
Hama Thai says it is necessary to clarify the reasons behind the death of Filipe Samuel Magaia.
On October 11, 1966, the “thinker” of the armed struggle for national liberation, Filipe Samuel Magaia, died. History says he was murdered. The responsibility is attributed to Lourenço Matola, a member of Frelimo and one of the guerrilla companions of the national hero but, according to some circles of opinion, this is a version with many grey areas.
General António Hama Thai knows the same story and believes that, although ancient, the case needs to be investigated to clarify the reasons behind the murder of Filipe Samuel Magaia. “This detail is still to be studied,” said Hama Thai, noting that, according to Mariano Matsinha, who was with Magaia at the time of the attack, and to the book launched by the Institute of Sociocultural Research [ARPAC] on the history of Magaia, Lourenço Matola is the person who shot the national liberation hero when they were about to cross the river on their way back to Tanzania. But, according to Hama Thai, much remains to be clarified. “There is space for investigation here, in order to provide information on who is Lourenço Matola, what was the motive of the murder. A quarrel between the two? What happened? I think these issues have yet to be investigated,” he said.
Hama Thai recalls the spirit of commitment and patriotism of ‘Commander Magaia’ who, still in his prime [he was 29 years old when he was killed and the armed liberation struggle had started in 1964], showed such dedication to the cause of the liberation of Mozambique that “he must be remembered for his determination and strong military knowledge.”
