An individual whose identity A Verdade was unable to establish lost his life at the hands of residents in the Matacuane neighbourhood of Beira late on Friday ( August 18), after being taken for thief in an incident which has become commonplace in that part of Sofala province.
The victim, apparently about 27 years old, begged for his life but could not dissuade the crowd from stoning him and beating him to death.
This is the eighth person to die in mob justice in Beira this year, against 11 deaths recorded from January to August 2016 in the same part of the country. The population routinely justifies its actions with the alleged absence of police patrols.
