A 30-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of killing a suspected thief in his home in the city of Maxixe and then throwing the victim’s body into Inhambane Bay.
The body was found in the bay on the 23rd of July, and was at first thought to be an instance of drowning, but investigations by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) concluded that the victim had suffered physical aggression probably at the hands of a man of about 30 years of age during the course of a burglary.
The accused however denies knowing anything about such an incident, saying: “I don’t know anything. I’ll tell you what, if it’s something I don’t know.”
Neighbourhood structures however allege a crime of passion, suggesting that the deceased had gone to the home of the accused because he was romantically involved with the man’s wife.
“I heard that he was not going to rob the house, but that he had conquered the accused’s wife, and had left money for dinner for the both of them [the victim and the accused’s wife],” Rumbana neighbourhood secretary Nelson Artur confided.
At the scene, the victim’s widow sought only the proper prosecution of her husband’s assailant.
“A child without a father… . I demand recompense from those who killed my husband,” she pleaded.
“SERNIC formed a team to hold the responsible individual accountable, and we believe that [the husband] was the one who murdered the man and threw his body on the beach,” a spokesperson said.
SERNIC figures indicate 36 homicides in Inhambane province so far this year.
