Joaquim Augusto Joaquim, 22, expected to receive a million meticais for the kidnapping of an albino child on March 22 in the Mwanza district of Sofala. He confessed yesterday during his trial in the Sofala Provincial Court in Beira to having kidnapped and witnessed the death of the victim, 4-year-old Inácio Pedro Jorge
Joaquim said he was contacted by telephone on the 20th of March by a man called David Jofrice, who told him he wanted a living albino child, and promising a million meticais in return.
So on March 22, Joaquim surprised the child and his mother as they were returning from their machamba at about 5:00 PM, and seized the child. He then took the little boy into hiding and called Jofrice, who came to meet him at around 7:00 PM.
“David took a rope and strangled the child to death. I just stood guard. I had never done anything like that. But he deceived me, saying that I would be given a million meticais. I’m sorry,” the defendant said.
