Maputo municipality is seizing private vehicles used in the unofficial passenger transport business, mainly vehicles leaving the Praça dos Combatentes for the Destacamento Feminino along Julius Nyerere Avenue.
Private vehicles offering what is known as ‘boleia paga’ [paid rides] were towed by Maputo Municipal Police in Combatants Square.
The lightning strike surprised operators at the informal taxi rank there, who saw their vehicles towed to the police pound.
The action also affected passengers who depend on this type of transportation, especially students at Eduardo Mondlane University.
The owners of the vehicles say they have in the past written to the Municipality of Maputo asking for licensing, but have not had any response.
Many of those who continued to offer rides saw their activity interrupted and their cars towed away.
The Municipal Police have promised to issue a statement on the matter by Friday (16-09).
