The councillor for Economic Promotion, Markets and Fairs on the municipal council of the city of Nampula, Osvaldo Ossufo, was released on Friday, after his detention on Thursday morning by order of the Provincial Office for Combating Corruption in Nampula (GPCCN), Ikweli reports.
Osvaldo Ossufo Momade, son of the president of Renamo, is the youngest councillor on Nampula mayor Paulo Vahanle’s team, and has excelled in providing good services to citizens, the same source adds.
On the date of Momade’s arrest, Thursday, 22 September, the GPCCN issued a statement clarifying that it had ordered the arrest of the young councillor because it had strong evidence of the practice of crimes of abuse of office or function, fraud and false testimony or declaration.
The matter concerns the issuance by Momade of opinions not administratively within his remit regarding the occupation of a space at the junction between Rua da Unidade and Avenida do Trabalho – the well-known Sipal level crossing.
Momade’s release was not accompanied by any of the fanfare observed at the time of his detention.
The provincial political delegation of the Renamo party in Nampula announced Momade’s release on its Facebook page, with an item stating: “Breaking: Osvaldo Ossufo Momade has been released this afternoon [Friday] because it was discovered that his detention was totally illegal”.
