Residents of the Munhava-Matope neighbourhood in Beira, were last Friday surprised to find large amounts of fuel in a drainage ditch.
Men, women and children scrambled to collect the fuel, while residents urged the authorities to resolve the problem, as posing a danger to the population.
‘Notícias’ reports that a diesel pipeline in the Porto da Beira enclosure in the neighbourhood burst on Friday, but the port authorities have not yet determined the cause.
The local community took advantage of the opportunity to collect fuel in containers in an illegal and dangerous manner.
With the arrival on site of members of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, the situation was controlled and the worst possible consequences avoided.
