A multi-sectoral commission has been set up by the government to address the long-standing problem over overloaded lorries, but the measures that have been adopted have proven insufficient.
Weighbridges have been positioned on numerous roads to weigh trucks and penalize excesses, but roads continue to be damaged by overloaded trucks.
Trucks found by weighbridge to be overloaded are penalized with fines of up to 50,000 meticais. It is known, however, that many vehicles bypass checkpoints by using alternative routes.
In Maputo province and city, for example, carriers of products such as stone and sand for construction have been avoiding the weighbridges for years by using roads well known to the National Road Administration, Traffic Police and other institutions related to road inspection.
