A Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) employee is being held in police cells in Montepuez district after being caught stealing rubies.
According to ‘Zumbo FM Noticias’, 20 other employees were interrogated and subjected to lie detector (polygraph) tests regarding the case.
The general management of Montepuez Ruby Mining decided to dismiss and compensate the 20 employees suspected of involvement in the theft of the rubies.
The detained employee “was caught on camera at the ruby sorting house in possession of four rubies valued at around US$2 million (about 128 million meticais)”.
Montepuez Ruby Mining has two ruby sorting houses, where around 40 Mozambican and more than 30 Indian employees work.
According to Zumbo FM, Montepuez Ruby Mining believes that the scheme is of long standing and may have stolen several rubies per day.
Zumbo FM also confirmed that the last two employees out of a total of 20 who were dismissed received their compensation checks yesterday (Tuesday).
