Mozambique: EDM and GMNK sign agreement to electrify communities affected by Mphanda Nkuwa project

Another important step has just taken place in the realisation of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric project, downstream from Cahora Bassa, with the swearing in of Carlos Alberto Yum as director of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office (GMNK – Gabinete de Implementação do Projecto Hidroeléctrico de Mphanda Nkuwa).
This office will coordinate actions aimed at the conception and structuring of the hydroelectric project, including the construction of the electricity transmission system and associated infrastructure.
Speaking at the swearing in, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, said the appointment marked an important step in the project environmental and scientific studies and the mobilisation of financing.
The Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Dam is seen as a structuring project which will contribute to meeting the challenge of increasing energy for economic and social development and bolstering Mozambique’s position in the southern Africa energy supply sector.
The Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office is responsible for carrying out and monitoring technical studies and for developing the initiative, giving credibility to the process and increasing the confidence of potential investors and financiers.
It will also have the task of creating, systematising and maintaining a database, ensuring the intellectual property of all studies and documentation relevant to the proper execution of the project.
The office will propose measures to resolve the pending issues related to the current concession, and hire specialised consultancy in the field of transactions, giving credibility to the process and increasing the confidence of investors and financiers.
