At least 15,542 people crossed the borders of Maputo province between Thursday and Saturday, of whom 11,188 used the Ressano Garcia post between Mozambique and South Africa, many of them returning to the neighbouring country.
The majority of the travellers are Mozambican nationals returning to their jobs in the mines, farms and other sectors of activity in South Africa after spending the Christmas and New Year holidays with family and friends.
According to Maputo Provincial Directorate of Migration spokesperson Carmen Mazenga, the largest flow of migrants was recorded at Ressano Garcia in Moamba district, where the authorities activated the pedestrian bypass channel and the ‘one-stop’ at Km 4 with a view to making it easier to serve travellers.
The source pointed out that, in view of the expected increase in demand for services at this time of year, the Migration services had increased human and material resources to reduce waiting times at the borders, especially Ressano Garcia, the busiest land entry point in the country.
The Ponta do Ouro border crossing in Matutuíne, also between Mozambique and South Africa, operates from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. over the festive season, compared to 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on other occasions.
