Mozambican middle distance runner Verónica José departed on Wednesday afternoon for Colombia, where she will compete in the 1,500 metres race at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships taking place in Santiago de Cali from Monday 1st to Friday 6th August.
Speaking to Notícias before her departure, Verónica said that she was proud to participate in a world championship for the first time, but especially “happy to be in Colombia on my own merit, that is, to have achieved the minimum qualifications. This indeed fills me with pride”.
Her coach, Alberto Lário, is involved in migratory problems with the Mozambican authorities and cannot travel, so the athlete goes to Colombia in the company of coach Salvador Chitsondzo, from Matchedje, but nevertheless promises to do her best in her World Athletics Championships debut.
“Despite what happened to my coach, I will try to fulfil my mission with commitment and dedication. I will do everything to dignify my country and my coach. Any result I achieve will be dedicated to him for all he has done for me,” said the Number Six in the U20 1500 metres world ranking.
Verónica Vicente José qualified for Cali in the Portuguese city of Braga on June 9, winning gold in the 1500 metres race with a time of 4 minutes 28.96 seconds.
