Transmarítima has launched a tender for a partner in its Mozambique coastal shipping program.
The Mozambcian government wants to promote maritime transport along the coast to reduce both traffic on national roads and the average cost of goods.
A Transmarítima source told Noticias that the tender just launched is aimed at forming a joint venture with a private entity with the ability to finance, operate, manage, maintain, develop and optimise its own costs in coastal shipping.
Transmaritima is a limited liability company 100 percent owned by the Mozambican state, dedicated at present to carrying passengers and their property at multiple sea and river crossings in the country. The partnership with a private entity aims to leverage the company’s business area, through the operation of coastal shipping.
The tender comes just days after the government approved the Decree on Special Ship Registration for Maritime Cabotage Transport, which opens the possibility of operating cabotage services in Mozambique to foreign operators.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the decree will boost activity and provide an alternative in the domestic market, and aims to allow national and international coastal shipping companies to invest in the sector on equal terms, benefiting from identical treatment by the state.
The idea is to promote sea transport route between domestic ports, favouring economies of scale and promoting the reduction of prices, making products more accessible to the population.
To encourage the entry of foreign investors in this activity, the government has introduced legislation guaranteeing priority berthing and reducing port tariffs nationally.
