Mozambique’s top university struggles to fund its operations

Mozambique’s oldest and top university, University Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), is going through a financial crisis affecting its operations, revealed by the university on a meeting with different partners to present its plan for the coming 10 years (2018-2028) on Wednesday in Maputo.

“Financial potential continues beyond our capacity, every year the university operates with a deficit between 4 and 18 percent for goods and services,” said the dean of the university Orlando Quilambo.

The dean told participants from public and private sectors that 70 percent of the university’s funds come from the state, and 10 percent is funded by international partners, while the university’s own income sources cover the remaining percentage.

According to Quilambo, the university has been seeking alternatives to meet its financial deficit and to improve the situation.
