President of MDM Daviz Simango again criticised the government and Renamo for their responsibility for the current political and military tension in the country and called on Mozambicans to join forces to help pull the country out of its current crisis.
The criticisms were launched in Beira during the MDM’s eighth anniversary celebration last Sunday, August 28, the day of its foundation, known within the party as the day of revolution.
“We anticipated that if Frelimo continued in power or Renamo ascended to it, there would be a war in the country and in fact there is, even if they deny it. Both Frelimo and Renamo are intolerant parties who think only of their interests and not of the nation. It is important to stop the killings for purely political reasons. There is room for all in such a vast country as ours,” the leader of the country’s second largest opposition party said.
Simango, who was speaking at a popular rally, said that both the government and Renamo spend millions buying weapons just to kill their own compatriots. Given the current situation of armed confrontation, the leader of the MDM launched appeals to the government and Renamo to engage in a serious dialogue to find an effective peace in the country.
Simango further said that it was possible to govern without resorting to weapons, giving as an example his party’s rise to governance in some municipalities.
“There was no need for us to take up arms and kill Mozambicans to gain victory,” Simango said, citing the party’s 16 parliamentary seats.
According to the MDM president, a nation can only develop if there is real national unity and acceptance of different ways of thinking.
“Thinking differently can not be a reason to be executed or excluded from society. The important thing in a society is love of your neighbour, respect for ideas and, above all, political tolerance.”
