Mozambican national air carrier Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) must prepare to operate in a competitive context, said the deputy minister of Transport and Communications, Manuela Rebelo.
The deputy minister referred directly to the presence in Mozambique of Ethiopian Airlines, in her statements to Mozambican newspaper Notícias, stating that the Ethiopian company is registered in the country and has been operating for two months.
LAM’s union commission recently announced that it intends to prevent Ethiopian Airlines from operating domestic flights in Mozambique through a subsidiary.
“LAM workers are asking lawmakers to restore legality and take steps to safeguard national interests,” the statement said.
In September 2017, Ethiopian Airlines and Malawi Airlines were the two foreign companies selected to explore domestic air routes under a public tender launched by the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique (IACM) in April.
