Mozambican actress Melanie de Vales, 23, has been given the “Best Young Actress in Africa” award by the Burkina Faso-based Sotigui Academy.
The third Sotigui Academy Awards gala ceremony took place this Saturday in Ougadougou, with the actress, one of ten shortlisted for the prize, in attendance.
Melanie received the award for her work in ‘Train of Salt and Sugar’, directed by Licínio Azevedo, in which she was the lead actress, playing the role of Nurse Rosa.
‘Train of Salt and Sugar’ chronicles a journey through civil war-torn Mozambique, and has received awards at several international festivals, including Best Feature Film at the Carthage Festival in Tunisia.
Recently, the film had commercial screenings in twenty Brazilian cities, some lasting four weeks, making it one of the few African films to achieve this kind of impact there.
Before taking a lead part in ‘Train of Salt and Sugar’, Melanie had participated in only one other film, when she was 14 – ‘Republic of Children’, by Guinean director Flora Gomes, mostly shot in Maputo.
