Mozambique’s main trade union federation, the OTM (Mozambican Workers’ Organisation), says that celebrating International Workers’ Day does not make sense in the context of Mozambique’s meagre wages, rising inflation and deplorable working conditions.
Next Monday, the first of May, should not be a day of celebration, OTM Secretary-General Alexandre Munguambe says, but one to highlight the current cost of living.

At a press conference convened yesterday to announce the demonstration that will take place on Labour Day, the OTM said that it would not be anything new for the Mozambican government to approve two salary adjustments in the same year.
The OTM said that it too is concerned to increase production, but that improvements in the working environment were also needed. Workers say that they will meet to find a joint solution in the face of the insignificant increases the government has approved.
OTM said that the minimum wage should be set at 16,000 meticais ( around US$247.549 at current exchange rates) reads the title at O País online edition today.
