Mozambique’s Jocelyne Machevo wins Power Play Award as LNG industry celebrates women’s contribution

- Inaugural ExxonMobil Power Play Awards build on success of networking initiative
The contributions of three women to the global LNG business were recognised at a gala event at the Gastech conference in Houston on Wednesday evening.
The Power Play Awards grew out of an eponymous networking initiative that first appeared at LNG18 in Perth 2016 and has since become an established series of events featuring at LNG conferences around the world.
Tracy Lothian, senior vice president of Rovuma LNG marketing at ExxonMobil, was the leading force of the initiative since it began and created the awards.
Three awards were presented on the night:
The Rising Star – presented to an outstanding female professional, age 35 or under Jocelyne Machevo, Eni Rovuma Basin
The Vanguard – given to a male or female professional who displays outstanding leadership Julie Mayo, Norton Rose Fulbright
The Rainmaker – awarded to a female professional who has delivered exceptional value and business results Phaedra Deckart, AGL Energy Limited
Behind the evening’s celebratory event lies a serious initiative to support the involvement and nurture the success of women across the LNG value chain industry. “There has been a real benefit in having a positive spotlight and different tone, different agenda and lots of networking,” says Lothian.
“The LNG industry has a remarkable number of women playing significant and diverse roles. When we highlight those in Power Play, it will help educate others and positively change the conversation.”
Lothian has overseen Power Play events being set up at LNG events, some of which have attracted 350 delegates. The events do not exclude men, but rather guarantee female inclusion. “If a man believes in a more diverse energy future,” Lothian says, “he is welcome.”
“One thing that I really enjoy about the LNG industry is how collegial everybody is,” Meg Gentle, CEO of US LNG export project developer Tellurian, told Petroleum Economist. “Because of the enormous capital investment, we are each other’s partners, suppliers, customers and competitors all at the same time.
“ExxonMobil Power Play Awards are a perfect example of engendering recognition among all of our partner companies to really strengthen the industry.”
The 2019 Power Play Awards were judged by seven industry figures—Dena Wiggins, CEO of US lobby group the Natural Gas Supply Association; Li Yalan, chair of the board of China’s Beijing Gas Group; Maria Sicilia, strategy director at Spain’s Enagas; Maya Morsy, president of Egypt’s National Council for Women; Momoyo Yuki San, deputy general manager at Japan’s Japex; Uzma Adil Khan, chair of Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority; and Yngvil Eriksson Asheim, managing director of Norway’s BW LNG—as well as an ‘eighth vote’ from the combined 40,000 people registered.
