The GIGAWAT project, a power plant fuelled by natural gas in Ressano Garcia, Maputo province, was awarded during the recent Africa Investor Conference in South Africa.
The plant, which has Standard Bank Mozambique as financial advisor, cost US$200 million and was opened in February. It has a generating capacity of 120 megawatts, an amount which represents 24 percent of Mozambique’s peak energy needs, excluding the Mozal aluminum production plant.
Gas for the plant is supplied by the Matola Gas Company from the Pande gas pipeline branch to South Africa, and 100 megawatts of the energy produced is supplied to EDM.
