The Mozambican government has over the past 12 days repaid a total of 100.4 million rand owed to former workers in South African mines.
According to AIM, the first phase of the process covered at least 825 beneficiaries in the southern provinces of Gaza, Inhambane and Maputo.
The process gives priority to miners who worked in South Africa from 1989 but who had never benefited from social insurance contributions paid from their salaries.
A press release issued yesterday by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security and received by AIM states that, in addition to payments, the campaign also included the opening of accounts at banking institutions selected for the purpose in the places where the registration process took place.
“With the submission of the required documentation (professional miner card, identity card or passport), former miners, widows, children or the legitimate representatives and relatives of deceased miners receive money directly from the Mineworkers Provident Fund, through the indicated banks, without going through the government, which remains part of the process only as supervisor,” the release reads.
