Mozambique’s exports to Thailand are showing remarkable growth, having surpassed the US$500 million mark in the last two years.
The information was released on Tuesday (06), by Vasco Manhiça, vice-president of the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) during a meeting in Maputo, promoted by business people from Thailand and the Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique.
“With regard to trade relations between Mozambique and Thailand, there has been an exponential growth in Mozambican exports to US$174 million in 2022 and US$380.1 million in 2023, compared to an average of around US$20 million in previous years,” Manhiça said.
“This growth was due to the increase in the export of precious and semi-precious stones,” he explained.
Imports reached around US$95 million in 2022 and US$123 million in 2023, comparable to the average amount of around US$150 million in the pre-Covid 19 period.
With regard to Mozambican imports from Thailand, Manhiça said, rice and vehicles for the transport of goods and passengers are pre-eminent.
According to Manhiça, the agriculture, aquaculture, industry, tourism and other sectors offer numerous opportunities for negotiating forecasts for rice processing machinery, as well as for transferring know-how, with a view to increasing national production and productivity.
“In the tourism sector, as Thailand is a world-renowned tourist destination, we would like to invite Thailand to invest in our country, in order to experience Thailand’s potential,” said the source.
He cited as an example the use of the tourism potential of Maputo Bay, as well as the connection between the city of Maputo and Inhaca Island, with the creation of tourist packages for the reuse of ferry boats or the introduction of “long-tail boats.”
“In this process, the CTA is available to facilitate all interaction and the establishment of partnerships between businesspeople,” he said.
He highlighted the fact that Mozambique is a country with a unique geostrategic location, bathed throughout its entire length by the Indian Ocean, which gives it great potential for investment in the transport and logistics sector.
This capacity is further strengthened by the fact that Mozambique provides access to the sea for the hinterland countries.
These advantages make Mozambique a country with a great capacity to develop investments in its different transport corridors.
