Mozambique’s trade balance with African countries grew by 66% in the last five years, reaching an export volume of US$7.1 billion (€6.2 billion), the government announced on Saturday at the launch of transactions under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
“Mozambique’s trade balance with other African countries has grown by 66% in the last five years, with a total export value of US$7.1 billion,” Prime Minister of Mozambique, Maria Benvinda Levi, said in Beira, Sofala province, where she launched the African continental free trade zone agreement.
In her speech, the prime minister defended the exploration of the continental market by all countries, stating that it represents a strategic opportunity for the internationalization and productive specialization of the national economy and private sector.
The Mozambican authorities announced in Beira that the country will now trade with 47 African countries under the agreement.
“Under the terms of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, last year Mozambique submitted its tariff offer, which was approved last February by the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, creating the conditions for our country to trade with around 47 African countries, which are part of this initiative,” Maria Benvinda Levi said.
For the Mozambican prime minister, the implementation of the AfCFTA increases Africa’s competitiveness in the area of trade, placing it as a reference in the global economy market, by promoting and boosting the comparative and competitive advantages of African countries’ value chains.
According to Benvinda Levi, the agreement SIGNED ensures the free movement of people and goods, the promotion of business and investment, and also contributes to the dynamization of the industrialization of our African countries, by adding value to the continent’s abundant natural resources and raw materials.
“To leverage industrialization on our continent, it is important to ensure continuous innovation, improvement of the business environment, technological modernization and development of support infrastructures, as well as the industrial and commercial competitiveness of our countries,” she stressed.
Mong potential gains, Levi listed the balance in trade balances, the increase in intra-African trade exchanges, as well as the creation of employment opportunities and the generation of income within African countries.
“The operationalization of the African continental free trade area represents a unique opportunity for the construction and consolidation of one of the largest markets in the world, as well as for the strategic internationalization of the productive potential of African countries,” she concluded.
