Environmental and biodiversity indicators have improved in the last three years in Mozambique as a result of cooperation actions with the United States of America in the sector.
So acknowledged president Filipe Nyusi yesterday, at a meeting with a US Congressional Delegation visiting the country.
At the meeting, President Nyusi praised the support the US has provided for the country’s development in areas such as education, health, agriculture, good governance and environmental preservation.
In the extractive industry sector, for example, the president pointed out that Mozambique has received large investments from US companies, like Anadarko, which holds interests in the exploitation of natural gas in the Rovuma basin.
“American companies that are directly on the ground and the companies in which they hold shares are working. As a result, we are in permanent contact to discuss procedures, because we want to define a common language to make the most of these investments,” Nyusi explained.
At the end of the meeting, the chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ed Royce reiterated the readiness of the US government to support Mozambique in optimising sustainable development.
“We want to contribute to making the country continue to be one of the preferred destinations in world tourism, because it has a wildlife and marine life of incomparable diversity,” he said, encouraging the efforts of the president and of the political leadership in the peace process.
The Americans said they were aware of the country’s rich natural heritage and resources and its parks and reserves, the sustainable exploitation of which could bring foreign currency into the country. This is particularly the case of the Gorongosa National Park, which is recognised worldwide for the diversity of its fauna and flora.
The two sides expressed interest in deepening cooperation to strengthen the fight against poaching, which is one of the factors that threaten the ecosystem.
In addition to these points, which dominated the meeting, the president reiterated Mozambique’s commitment to complying with United Nations resolutions on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
