Choreographer, dancer and cultural manager David Abilio is the only African guest and the first Mozambican to be part of the international jury panel for the 21st Rome Dance Prize 2023 edition.
The invitation for the event, taking place between the 9th and 13th of July, comes in recognition of Abilio’s contribution to the development of the performing arts in general and dance in particular, as well as the training of dancers, dance teachers and choreographers in academies and schools in Mozambique and internationally.
Reacting to his nomination, David Abilio says he was surprised by the invitation, since he has not performed personally for several years, but was even so delighted with the recognition.
Furthermore, Abilio says that his nomination represents international recognition of Mozambican culture and promises to do everything to raise the cultural flag of Mozambique high in Italy.
David Abilio directed the National Company of Song and Dance for 30 years. He is currently an advisor to the Minister of Culture and, as a corollary of his promotion of arts and culture, was this year awarded the Medal of Arts and Letters by the government.
