The education sector will allocate 40,000 additional school desks to schools this year, Minister of Education and Human Development, Carmelita Namashulua, said on a working visit to the central province of Zambézia.
This year, the education sector will spend just over 200 million meticais acquiring desks for the estimated one million plus students still sitting on the floor at school.
The minister of Education and Human Development visited Mocuba and Lugela districts, Zambéia province, on Wednesday (26-05) and this Thursday was in Nicoadala district, examining the conditions in which children are currently studying.
In Mocuba, Minister Namashulua visited Marmanelo Primary School, and was confronted with piles of broken desks amassed by the establishment since 2018. The minister did not like what she saw and asked school managers about the reason for the situation, before ordering that the damaged desks be removed and repaired.
“We have seen multiple instances of broken desks left out in the open, a few by many schools in the country, and this is not reassuring: it reveals neglect in terms of conservation,” the minister said. “We need to improve this situation,” she added, noting that the sector was considering revitalising provincial carpentry and linking that to provincial education directorates for the maintenance of school furniture.
Mozambique currently has eight million students in more than 13,000 primary and 618 secondary schools.
