The German government has made available a total of five million Euros in immediate humanitarian aid under the United Nations Revised Humanitarian Response Plan for the Mozambican population devastated by Cyclone Idai and floods and drought.
The German federal government is supporting the humanitarian activities of the World Food Program (WFP), UNICEF, humanitarian NGOs, the German Red Cross, Johanniter, Caritas International, Care and the German Federal Relief Agency (THW) and targeting food, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and health sectors.
A statement from the German embassy in Maputo says that the German people wish to express their solidarity and sympathy with those Mozambicans affected by Cyclone Idai. “Through donations received, several German NGOs, schools and municipalities are supporting humanitarian measures in central Mozambique.”
On Wednesday and Thursday this week the German ambassador to Mozambique, Detlev Wolter, will travel to and around Beira, where, in addition to visiting humanitarian aid partner organisations and teams, he will meet Mozambique’s minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Higino Francisco de Marrule, Sofala governor Alberto Mondlane, and the president of the Beira City Council, Daviz Simango.
Ambassador Wolter will also visit Germany’s partner organisations in Beira, such as the St. Egidio DREAM Centre and the Beira PASCH School of Industry and Commercial Institute, which are being supported during reconstruction.
The German federal government is also considering additional transitional assistance and reconstruction measures in the regions affected.
