Another businessman was rescued from the hands of his kidnappers, this morning, in the city of Matola, Maputo province, in an operation carried out by the National Criminal Investigation Service, SERNIC.
This is Manish Cantilal, who spent 92 days as a hostage. During his time in captivity, the businessman was tortured by three to five individuals who demanded a ransom to restore him to freedom, said Cantilal moments after leaving the scene, with his legs still tied by a chain.
Cantilal explained that torture was used to pressure the family to cooperate with the kidnappers and find the means to pay the ransom.
This is the second businessman rescued by SERNIC today, after Rizwan Adatia, a businessman and philanthropist, was released from a hiding place where he was being held by his kidnapers in Mulotane, Boane district, this morning. During the Adatia rescue operation, three people were arrested.
SERNIC’s provincial director, Benjamina Chaves, speaking to the press today, said that Cantilal’s release was posible thanks to a tip off indicating that one of the individuals arrested in Mulotane during the rescue of Rizwan Adatia had participated in both kidnappings.
Chaves said that, after hearing the young man involved in the two schemes, it was possible to locate the second hiding place [that of Manish Cantilal’s kidnappers], and the SERNIC team moved to this location. However, no other individuals were found besides the hostage.
Chaves added that another individual who is an employee of the municipality of Maputo is in detention and is accused of his involvement in the kidnapping of Rizwan Adatia.
The provincial director of the National Criminal Investigation Service made it clear that SERNIC will not rest until it neutralises the protagonists of the acts.
“SERNIC is still proceeding with the investigations. I cannot advertise here, but we have some elements, some investigation lines. In due time we will share with you in terms of arrests. We continue with the investigation despite the fact that he is already back with his family. It is a crime that has been committed and this crime has to be clarified and we are working,” she said.
