Mozambique/Attacks: Maputo is receiving support from Uganda, President reveals

President Filipe Nyusi revealed yesterday that Mozambique is receiving logistical support from Uganda in the fight against the rebel groups active in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province.

“Uganda is already supporting Mozambique logistically, in a very profound way. What we came here to do is to say thank you,” declared the Mozambican head of state in Kampala after meeting Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni as part of his three-day visit there.

The logistical support that Uganda has made available to Mozambique is being used to strengthen the capacities of local forces composed mostly of former combatants of the national liberation struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime and of the 16-year civil war.

“[Mozambique thanks you] on behalf of the veterans of the liberation struggle, who President Museveni knows very well,” declared Filipe Nyusi, without going into further detail about the exact nature of that support.

Also on Wednesday (27-04), the two governments signed memoranda of understanding in areas of cooperation such as agriculture, trade and investment and youth and employment, among others.

Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, is rich in natural gas, but has been terrorized since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), about 784,000 persons have been internally displaced by the conflict, which has killed about 4,000, according to the ACLED conflict registry project.

Since July 2021, an offensive by government troops, with the support of Rwandan and later Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops, has recovered a number of areas from rebel control, but their flight has led to new attacks in districts through which they have passed or taken up temporary refuge.
