The capacity of the pipeline at the Port of Beira fuel terminal will increase from two million to three million cubic metres/year, with the inauguration yesterday by President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, of the Beira and Maforga pumping platforms.
The project, led by the Mozambique-Zimbabwe Pipeline Company (CPMZ), will enable safe supply to Zimbabwe via the Beira-Feruka-Harare pipeline, and access by other hinterland countries, in compliance with SADC agreements on the matter.
The project is valued at US$40 million, and consists of the construction of two new pumping platforms and the replacement of the old pumps with new, higher-capacity ones.
Speaking at the inauguration, Filipe Nyusi said that “this ceremony celebrates our determination to continue fighting for the development of our economies, making the most of all resources, especially Mozambique’s geostrategic position, placing the rail and port systems as an exit corridor for neighbouring countries”.
The president added that the event was an important milestone in Mozambique-Zimbabwe relations.
“During the two cycles of governance, we have cultivated excellent relations of cooperation and friendship with the countries of the hinterland, and our priority has been to invest in the expansion and modernisation of the ports of Beira, Nacala and Maputo, including railways, roads, fuel depots, aqueducts and oil pipelines, which serves as recognition of the country as an exporter of these services in our relations with Southern Africa,” Nyusi highlighted, noting that the CPMZ operates to international safety standards.
