The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has lifted a ban on Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) using Zimbabwean airspace, Savana online reported on Friday.
The CAAZ did not address the causes behind the lifting of the ban, but a source from that entity assured Savana that the move occurred due to the intervention of the Mozambican executive, with the authorities of that country.
The same source also mentions ongoing negotiations between the parties, taking into account that Zimbabwe has a huge debt with Mozambique relating to the supply of electricity.
In its edition of Friday July 5, Savana published that LAM was banned from flying over Zimbabwean airspace due to debt.
This situation forced the flag carrier to take an additional 40-50 minutes on the Maputo-Lisbon flight, which as a general rule takes around 10 hours, meaning the flight lasted approximately 10 hours and 50 minutes.
Furthermore, this would increase LAM’s operating costs, taking into account the cost of jet fuel.
