Mozambique-Zimbabwe Joint Commission to be revived – AIM report

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnangagwa, have decided to reactivate, this year, the Joint Commission between the two countries, which last met in 2013.

This was the public result of a visit on Saturday to Harare by Nyusi, in his capacity as the current chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Nyusi said various factors had prevented the Joint Commission from holding regular meetings. But now the two countries thought it desirable and urgent to resume the operations of the Commission.

“We reviewed our cooperation, which should always by nourished with ideas, and we shall see about resuming the meetings of the Mozambique-Zimbabwe Joint Commission”, Nyusi said. “We shall resume its work this year”.

Despite the current threat of terrorism in parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Nyusi stressed that the development of the country cannot stop until that problem is solved.

“Our thinking is that we cannot work to solve one problem, then a second and then a third. We have to do everything at the same time”, Nyusi said. “We have terrorism, but development must not stop”.

Mnangagwa confirmed that the dominant theme of the meeting was the resumption of meetings of the Joint Commission, because the two countries face common problems and challenges, which should be debated and solved within the bilateral commission.

Mnangagwa said that when he had met Nyusi at the recent SADC defence and security summit in Maputo, “I said, why don’t you come to Harare? And he accepted my invitation. We talked about many things, but the most important was we felt that the Joint Commission, which last met in 2013, should resume its meetings”.

Mnangagwa added that Nyusi had briefed him on the security situation in Cabo Delgado, where islamist terrorists have been active since October 2017.
