The Mozambican authorities have made available around 130 tonnes of food, seeds and building materials, donated by Zimbabwe, to the victims of the natural disasters in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique.
“We have 30 tonnes of maize flour, 41 tonnes of sugar, around 12 tonnes of maize, 45 tonnes of wheat, 1,736 units of zinc sheets and 69 kilograms of nails,” said the president of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Luísa Meque, during the handover ceremony.
According to the INGD president, the donation, which began to be made available in the province on Tuesday, aims to support families affected by the extreme natural events in Cabo Delgado.
Luísa Meque also said that the measure aims to improve the suffering of the victims of natural disasters, such as the three cyclones that hit the centre and north of the country in December, January and March.
On the other hand, Cabo Delgado, a gas-rich province, has also been facing an armed rebellion since 2017, which has caused thousands of deaths and a humanitarian crisis, with more than a million people displaced.
The governor of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo, said that this aid will be made available to the beneficiaries in good time: “Where there is a need for reinforcement of some material, the province will also campaign for this material to be complemented.”
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, but also prolonged periods of severe drought.
Between December and March alone, the country has already been hit by three cyclones, which, in addition to destroying thousands of homes and infrastructures, have caused around 175 deaths.
Extreme events such as cyclones and storms have caused at least 1,016 deaths in Mozambique between 2019 and 2023, affecting around 4.9 million people, according to data from the National Statistics Institute.
