Mozambique and Zambia yesterday signed an agreement for the establishment of a one-stop border post between the two countries at Cassacatiza, whose objective is to facilitate trade exchanges and develop the two countries, the Mozambican president announced.
“We signed an agreement today to build a one-stop border, the Cassacatiza border, between Zambia and Mozambique, to accelerate trade between the two brother countries, because we believe that Zambia and Mozambique are two brother countries and we must continue united, cohesive, to develop our two countries,” President Daniel Chapo said after signing the agreement.
The head of state was speaking in Lusaka, in neighbouring Zambia, a country which borders Mozambique in the central province of Tete, after signing the agreement with Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema during a visit to that country, which ends this Friday.
President Hakainde Hichilema expressed interest in expanding areas of cooperation with Mozambique, highlighting trade and also referring to agreements in the areas of energy and gas.
On 8 October, the Government of Mozambique announced that it will launch international public tenders to modernise and expand border posts in two central provinces – Manica (Machipanda border) and Tete (Cassacatiza border) – under a public-private partnership regime.
The concession and upgrading, according to the spokesperson of the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, will result in greater “fluidity” in the transport of people and goods, increased revenue collection and activity in the corridors, improvement of institutional image and national security, in addition to generating greater logistical competitiveness of port corridors and stimulating economic development in the border provinces of the country.
