Musical band the Garimpeiros (Miners) will represent Mozambique in the 8th Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries, an international event taking place from the 24th to the 30th of this month in Macau.
Seeing them off at the governor’s office, Governor Abdul Razak said that going to represent Mozambican was a great responsibility.
“It is a great responsibility, in terms of the quality of our music, to present our songs at this festival,” Razak said, in a clear reminder that the group cannot fail the expectations of the province, and indeed the country.
The governor said it was important to behave well both on and off stage, and be true ambassadors of Mozambican culture. He urged the group to follow the example of iconic Zambezia musician, Mussa Rodrigues: “You are the Mozambican province of Zambezia. Dignify the country and the province!” he said.
Band representative Ney Gany said that the group was ready to deliver everything it had in Macau to represent the country and the province, adding that they were also taking the Nhambaro dance company to the festival stage, and that all artistic and technical conditions had been comprehensively met.
The artists said they were pleased the ‘Garimpeiros’ had been chosen to represent the country in an event of such magnitude.
“It is an honour for us, because we are a country of many cultures, many people and especially many musicians, yet we are the ones chosen. this is our 20th year together, and the could be no better gift than this for a band that has worked hard for 20 years he,” he said.
The ten-piece band leaved Maputo for Johannesburg today, flying from there to Macau.
