Mozambique: Zambezia hit by moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9

An earthquake of magnitude of 4.9 on the Rischter scale shook the central province of Zambézia on Thursday, but no damage had been reported by yesterday afternoon, ‘O País’ reports.
The quake epicentre was situated between the administrative post of Chire, Morrumbala district, and Nsanje district, in the neighbouring Republic of Malawi.
The earthquake, which occurred around 12:43 p.m. on Thursday, was also felt in the districts of Milange and Quelimane.
In addition to the district of Morrumbala, the earthquake was also felt in the districts of Milange and Quelimane.
GDACS – Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System reported yesterday that the nearest places to the earthquake’s epicentre “are Nhamuanha, Penembe, Induna, Mepamba, Tóle, Nhacalása, Galimote, Caverére, Amosse, Chagáca, and Popoto”.
“This earthquake is expected to have a low humanitarian impact based on the magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability,” GDACS added.
