The government of Zambezia, in central Mozambique, has collected eight tonnes of produce 15 days after launching a movement to support victims of armed conflict in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, the governor announced on Tuesday.
“To publicly thank you and say that we are quite grateful. [The support] is a clear way of saying that we are in solidarity with those who suffer victims of terrorism,” Pio Matos, governor of Zambezia province, said in statements to the media.
The solidarity movement, called “Zambézia Hand in Hand with Cabo Delgado”, was launched on 20 April and will last for 30 days.
The governor reiterated the need to make an effort to support the victims of armed violence in the north of the country, noting that the “fight against terrorism is not only done with weapons”.
The governor said that “terrorism is a great evil for all humanity and, therefore, we have to join hands to fight it”.
Several companies in the province have joined the cause by donating food products, clothes and household utensils.
“We could not remain uninvolved in this humanitarian movement and gesture of solidarity,” said Altaf Catar, member of the Association of Bakers of Zambezia.
Armed groups have terrorised Cabo Delgado since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the ‘jihadist’ group Islamic State, in a wave of violence that has led to more than 2,500 deaths according to the ACLED conflict registration project and 714,000 displaced people according to the Mozambican government.
The most recent attack occurred on 24 March against the town of Palma, causing dozens of deaths and wounded.
The Mozambican authorities regained control of the town. Still, the attack led oil company Total to abandon indefinitely the site of the gas project scheduled to start production in 2024 and on which many of Mozambique’s economic growth expectations for the next decade are anchored.
