A group of 50 local young people trained in electrical engineering and decorating by the Namanhumbir Professional Training Centre (VTC) at the expense of the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) have been selected by a private company to participate in reconstruction in two of the districts most affected by the insurgency in the province of Cabo Delgado.
The technicians come from villages in the administrative post of Namanhumbir, in Montepuez district, as well as from neighbouring districts and the city of Pemba. MRM covered all expenses associated with their courses, as well as the running of the VTC.
For many young people selected to participate in this much-needed reconstruction, this is their first formal job. Such is the case of a 22-year-old electrician, who completed the course in 2022. He is going to work in Palma, and hopes to apply the knowledge acquired during his training. “My objective is to gain experience, and use this opportunity to open other doors,” he says.
Another 26-year-old electrician is proud to be involved in the reconstruction and thanks Montepuez Ruby Mining for its assistance. “MRM gave me a profession that allows me to serve the country in such a noble mission. The Namanhumbir Professional Training Centre has opened the doors to success in life for me,” he says.
Both youths are going to Palma and Mocímboa da Praia this February, on a 12-month work contract.
MRM has invested in technical-professional training since 2018, when, through the Alberto Cassimo Institute for Vocational Training and Labour Studies (IFPELAC), it established a partnership with the government under which it built the Namanhumbir Professional Training Centre, at an estimated cost of US$1.8 million, with the aim of training 2,100 local young people.
About Montepuez Ruby Mining
Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada (MRM) is a Mozambican company operating at the Montepuezruby deposit located in the northeast of Mozambique in Cabo Delgado province. Covering approximately 33,600 hectares, it is believed to be the most significant recently discovered ruby deposit in the world.
MRM is 75% owned by Gemfields and 25% by Mwiriti, a Mozambican company. MRM aims to emulate the values of Gemfields and operate in a way that contributes positively to the national economy, while taking a leading role in modernising the coloured gemstone sector and building sustainable livelihoods for the communities around the mine. MRM believes that coloured gemstones should be mined and marketed by championing three key values – legitimacy, transparency and integrity.
Gemfields is a world leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones. In addition to MRM, Gemfields is the operator and 75% owner of the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia (believed to be the world’s single largest producing emerald mine), as well as bulk sampling licences in Ethiopia, amongst others.
Gemfields has developed a proprietary grading system and a pioneering auction and trading platform to provide a consistent supply of coloured gemstones to the global jewellery market.
Fabergé – an iconic name with an exceptional heritage – is a member of the Gemfields Group. This enables Gemfields to improve its positioning, perception and consumer awareness of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones through the beauty of design and craftsmanship.
Gemfields’ responsibly sourced gemstones are the preferred choice for show pieces created by many world renowned luxury houses and cutting-edge designers.
