A 23-year-old young man is in the custody of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) of Zambézia, accused of illegal electrical connections and theft of electrical material.
The accused is a worker at the company Power Change, which operates in the electricity sector as part of the Energy for All project, and reportedly established clandestine electrical connections in the village of Namacata [Nicoadala district] for a fee.
Zambézia SERNIC spokesperson Maximino Amilcar said that institution had been tracking the individual since last year for committing crimes of this type, and was also tracking three accomplices.
Stolen electricity costs Mozambique around 624,000 meticais per annum, while the population pays around 254,000 meticais in illicit charges, Amilcar added.
The young man admits that he made the clandestine connections, adding that he did so with the connivance of colleagues who supplied him with materials used in the work.
