Mozambique: Independence day attracts vendors to stadium, optimism about future
A minor of under 12 was kidnapped by strangers on Tuesday morning in downtown Maputo, a police source told Lusa on Wednesday.
The kidnapping occurred at 7.50 a.m. (5.50 a.m. in Lisbon) on Josina Machel Avenue, police spokesman Leonel Muchina told Lusa.
The minor is the son of an entrepreneur from Armazéns África, a company specialising in the sale of electrical equipment, located on the same avenue where the crime occurred.
The crime was recorded by surveillance cameras of establishments on the avenue and the images show the moment when one of the kidnappers dragged the victim inside a car, which then sped off.
The images showed that the kidnappers chased the child, who was on his way to school.
After a wave of kidnappings in the main Mozambican cities, which peaked between 2012 and 2013, these cases have been reduced in recent years, but in recent months the authorities have again registered this type of crime.
This is the fourth kidnapping case recorded this year in Mozambique, involving businessmen or family members.
