Mozambique: Year-long celebrations of Frelimo 60th anniversary launched in Maputo

Celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Frelimo, to be marked on 25 June next year, were launched in Maputo on Friday (June 25).

The official launch of the celebrations, guided by Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi, coincides with the inauguration of the newly renovated Frelimo national headquarters and with the celebrations of the 46th anniversary of national independence.

On the occasion, Filipe Nyusi said that the simultaneous celebration of the party’s founding and of national independence was more than mere coincidence. For the Frelimo president, these two realities could not be dissociated.

“It is Frelimo that built the idea of a Mozambican nation, sovereign, united and indivisible. Since the foreign occupation, Mozambicans have always developed various forms of struggle against colonialism, but were unsuccessful due to their isolated and sporadic character. The foundation of Frelimo represents the height of nationalist consciousness, the original and genuine form of organisation and union of Mozambicans, without regional, racial, religious or social distinction, in the arduous struggle against colonialism,” he expounded.

On the 46th anniversary of national independence, Filipe Nyusi promised that the Defence and Security Forces would intensify their operations in the fight against terrorists in Cabo Delgado, facing them bravely and fearlessly.
