Vendors in Xipamanine municipal market in Maputo were urged to observe coronavirus preventative measures on Tuesday, ‘Noticias’ reports, and requested to spread the message in their own neighbourhoods.
But Xipamanine market has hundreds of vendors, and the stalls are close to each other, which does not always allow the one metre distance between individuals necessary for preventing the spread of disease.
And some traders are neglecting hand hygiene after contact with money, one of the possible vectors of Covid-19.
Out of concern for the situation, the Ministry of Health (MISAU), the State Secretariat for Youth and Employment and young people from the National Volunteer Council (CNV) toured Xipamanine detailing preventative messages to vendors and customers.
CNV president Osvaldo Mauaie said that the aim of the awareness campaign was for vendors to implement the recommendations and pass on their knowledge to their families and communities.
“We have fathers, mothers and young people who continue to be exposed to the risk of Covid-19 contagion, as they stay in places with a lot of people; other vendors deal with money, so they should learn how to avoid being a vector for the transmission of the pandemic,” Mauaie explained.
The CNV president urged vendors to avoid crowds on Women’s Day, realising the importance of the health of this social layer to families’ economies and society generally.
National director of Youth Affairs at the State Secretariat for Youth and Employment, Roy Tembe, for his part underlined that challenges in the market environment should not stop vendors from complying with prevention measures.
“Even with the lack of hygiene materials, we want to observe prevention measures, such as washing hands and taking care about eating, as the virus does not discriminate on the basis of race, age or social status,” Tembe noted.
MISAU representative, Natércia Monjane, urged people to adopt preventative measures and pass them on them within their communities. “For example, we trained several young volunteers to disseminate the new coronavirus prevention messages at national level,” Monjane said.
In addition to Xipamanine, the volunteers a few days ago visited the Estrela Vermelha market and various bus terminals.
