The World Bank is to provide more than 200 million meticais (€2 million) for the rehabilitation of two roads in Zambezia province in central Mozambique.
These are national roads number 1 and number 10 in Zambézia and the work to be carried out covers a length of around 70 kilometres, in a two-year project, the minister for public works, water resources and housing, João Machatine, was cited on Tuesday by the local press.
The rehabilitation of the roads will create better conditions for traffic moving in and out of Quelimane, the provincial capital of Zambézia, as well as widening the roads, the minister said.
“Calling on the population to collaborate so that this undertaking can take place without any kind of upheaval because by doing so we will be damaging our province,” the minister said.
The rehabilitation work is part of the Integrated Rural Road Development Project, launched in 2018 in the provinces of Zambézia, Sofala, Manica, Tete, in the centre, and Nampula and Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, prioritising points affected by cyclones Idai and Keneth, which hit the country last year.
