Mozambique: Chapo considers Geny Catamo an "example for the youth" as Sporting wins consecutive ...
South Africa’s AFCON FUTSAL campaign got off to a bad start when the Joao Pinto-coached side lost 4-7 to Mozambique at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on Friday.
Renaldo Donnelly struck twice for the tournament hosts, but his brace was overshadowed by a hat-trick from Ricardo Mendes.
The contest ignited early on as Mendes and Jose da Silva made it 2-0 to the visitors before Donnelly pulled one back.
Mendes added a third goal, but South Africa captain Nwashokwe Mashaba reduced the arrears with a fierce shot on the stroke of half time.
Before Mashaba’s strike, Pinto’s charges could have netted twice but were wayward in front of goal.
The trend continued in the second half as Kyle Koert missed a penalty for South Africa.
Mozambique made it 4-2 soon after when Amin Claudio fired past goalkeeper Teboho Mofolo.
It then became 5-2 when Mendes completed his hat-trick, but Donnelly again responded for the home side to make it 5-3.
Flavio and Ziraldo then scored two goals in quick succession before Radlin Sanssoucie netted for Pinto’s outfit.
South Africa’s biggest shortcoming was their lack of composure in front of goal and will aim to improve when they next take on Zambia on Sunday.
