A woman was found dead last Thursday (28) at her residence in Chimoio, the capital of Manica province, apparently murdered after being raped. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the dead body of a Maputo Central Hospital employee was found, also with signs of having been raped.
The 45-year-old Chimoio rape victim was last seen on Wednesday, the day before her body was found, consuming alcoholic beverages in the company of an unidentified individual in the neighbourhood where she lived.
One of the neighbours told reporters that she heard screams, and, when she went to investigate, she found the citizen, a widow who lived alone, already dead and with signs of having been sexually assaulted and beaten to death.
In her recent report to the Assembly of the Republic, Mozambique’s Attorney General said that “crimes against sexual freedom are a major concern for our country and, due to their nature, frequency and effects, may be considered a public health problem”. During the past year, 875 sexual violations were officially recorded in Mozambique.
