The collective exhibition “Women, Art and Healing” opens this Friday at Núcleo de Arte in Maputo, just in time for Mozambican Women’s Day on April 7.
Curated by Raquel Vedor, the exhibition shows works by Mozambican visual artists: Saquitifa, Sandra Pizura, Bena Felipe, Emília Fernandes, Fernanda Lima, Melice, Farida and Lizie Ana, and Spanish visual artist Cristina González Martin. It proposes a reflection on art as an instrument of collective healing, highlighting themes such as overcoming violence, resilience.
Aldino Languana, president of Núcleo D’Arte, emphasizes the historical nature of the project with one particularity: “This time everything is done by women, from the curation to the works. We challenged Raquel, who embraced the curatorship proposal with dedication and the result promotes voices that need to be heard,” Languana said.
The exhibition will be open to the public until April 20th.
“It is an honour to see our temple of visual arts welcome so much creative power,” Languana concludes.
The exhibition brings together techniques such as painting, recycling, fabrics, ceramics and video. Two of the works are interactive: one allows the public to express personal pain, while the other collects healing messages.
Raquel Vedor, who is making her debut as a curator at Núcleo D’Arte, says that the exhibition “does not hide the pain, but celebrates the strength of starting over”.
Parallel workshops and debates with the artists will also take place.
