A 49-year-old woman residing in northern Mozambique and with Portuguese nationality, who had been kidnapped on April 13 in Maputo, was released on Friday, a source who followed the case told Lusa.
The victim, married to a businessman working in the hospitality industry, returned to the family in Nampula, after 45 days of captivity, with details of her release still unknown, added the same source.
The abduction took place in Maputo, during the day, after the victim left the Portuguese consulate building on Avenida Mao Tse Tung, one of the main arteries in the capital.
When she was going to her car, she was intercepted by strangers in a light vehicle and with a weapon that is suspected to be an AKM47, a police source said at the time.
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced in December the possibility of creating an anti-kidnapping police unit to fight the crime wave, with 11 cases registered during 2020.
CTA – Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique, the largest employer association in the country, has also demanded on several occasions a severe fight against this type of crime that has targeted businessmen and their families.
