A young woman whose left hand was cut off by her husband is in a stable condition and receiving psychosocial support at Búzi Rural Hospital in Sofala province.
It all started when a disagreement with her mother-in-law drove 28-year-old Isabel to return to her parents’ home.
The man’s family tried unsuccessfully to solve the problem, and Isabel’s husband resorted to violence, using a machete to cut off his wife’s left hand and strike her on the head.
“I left home for that of my parents because my mother-in-law accused me of witchcraft. A week later my husband came to pick me up, but I refused [to go with him] because he said that he wouldn’t arrive home [still] with me, since his mother didn’t want to see me,” she recalls. “He [then] called the family to resolve the matter, but it didn’t work out, so he decided to injure me with a machete, and so he did – up until he cut off my left hand,” she said.
The 27-year-old assailant is currently being held in the Búzi police District Command.
